The future of Offshore Netherlands, Germany and Belgium

The wind sector is in a state of constant change. For the first time new projects are being delayed and withdrawn by operators reporting lack of profit, while at the same time the Dutch government withheld subsidy due to high profits during the energy crisis. During this maelstrom of investment, China threatens to take over Europe’s leadership position in the global wind market, recently putting the world’s largest offshore windmill in operation.

There are more and more challenges with grid capacity, need for new offshore infrastructure, labour shortages in the sector, and looming climate goalsl. Wind is up against what could be the largest challenge of its lifetime. Exactly the moment to get together to discuss what needs to be done and how we can achieve it. Be part of the solution and join the conversation at Offshore Industry: Wind edition!

Programme 2023

The schedule for Offshore Industry: Wind edition

11.00 Reception & Registration

This day is moderated by Jan Vos, Chairman of the board of the Netherlands Wind Energy Association (NWEA), Vice-Chairman of the NVDE, Board Member of the TKI Offshore

The sector is in turmoil, with some operators scrapping projects, while others  increase investment. At the same time, technology and policy keeps evolving, and market shares shift. Where does Europe stand with offshore wind, and what are our prospects for the coming years? Listen to Ruben Dijkstra, Director Benelux, Ørsted for their view on the North Sea Offshore wind potential.

Wind power is not solely produced by dedicated farmers and operators, energy intensive firms are investing in green energy themselves! What can wind investments do for your business in terms of product value, energy costs, carbon reduction, branding, and ESG? Learn from companies that are or have already invested in their own offshore wind farms!

Panel discussion with:

  • Albert Kassies, Director New Energy, Tata Steel
  • Carol Yan, Head of Energy Transition & Renewables EMEA, Amazon
  • Ruben Dijkstra, CEO, Benelux Ørsted

12.55 Networking Lunch

Europe has long been the lead producer of both wind energy and wind assets. Now, the economic centre of gravity in the wind sector is shifting towards Asia. With the largest operating windmill, significant share in global wind electricity production, and an increasing role exporting wind assets to Europe, how should the continent respond to the rapidly growing Chinese wind sector?

Michal Meidan, Head of China Energy Research, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies

Europe is working hard to transition its energy system, but green energy sources by and large come in the form of electricity. The electric grid needs to upgrade capacity and find new solutions to facilitate larger inflows and outflows as well as issues of intermittency. Combine this with the need for new offshore networks, and the infrastructural actors in the electricity sector are up against quite a challenge! How does this affect the rollout of offshore wind? How does it affect your business’ energy bill? And what needs to be done to create a robust energy system that can handle the transition?

Find out in a panel discussion with crucial infrastructural figures:

  • Marco Kuijpers, Director Large Projects Offshore, TenneT
  • Jan Willem van Hoogstraten, CEO, EBN
  • Catring Jung, Head of Business Unit Offshore Wind, Vattenfall

15.00 Coffee Break

Floating windmills are a relatively new technology in the energy market. Their mobility allows them to fulfill temporary roles, such as electrifying conventional energy platforms. What other roles can mobile windfarms play in the new energy system and what is their business model compared to traditional windfarms?

Find out with a presentation from a floating wind expert:

Jonathan Bull, Global Director Offshore Wind Renewables & UK Resident Director for Operations, Royal HaskoningDHV

Expert interview on the future of the energy system, focusing on the future of the energy system at sea. Technical innovation in the offshore sector is needed to grow production and the rising demand in wind capacity at sea. How will we achieve this growth?

Experts:

  • Hugo Bouvy, Managing Director, DEME Offshore
